The Department of Trade
and Industry – Davao del Norte Provincial Office represented by its Officer
in Charge Romeo L. Castañaga and
the city government of Tagum represented by Mayor Allan L. Rellon signed a
memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the Timbangan ng Bayan project during the
city’s convocation ceremony on March 2, 2015.

Mr. Castañaga stated that the memorandum of
agreement contains the terms by which the Department of Trade and Industry
through its Consumer Welfare and Trade Regulation Division entrusted a total
of 8 customized and pre-calibrated weighing scales to the local government
unit of Tagum City.
The Timbangan ng Bayan program is an initiative of
the Department of Trade and Industry to further champion consumer welfare. Under
this, the agency in cooperation with local government units will install
weighing scales in public markets around the country to give consumers the
chance to verify the correctness of the weight of the merchandise they have
purchased.
DTI Davao del Norte has allocated a total of 32 Timbangan ng Bayan to 11 cities and municipalities in the province. These weighing scales which come
in specially-designed secure steel cages are/will be strategically installed
in conspicuous places in various public markets all over the province.

DTI continues to encourage consumers to be vigilant
and report any violations on consumer rights to their office or to their
local government units.
